THE SITUATION
Founded in 1912, The Colorado Mountain Club is the largest outdoor recreation, education, and conservation organization in the Rocky Mountain West. In 2005, The Colorado Mountain Club Press lost a key employee and Boulder Bookworks was asked in to evaluate the publishing program and formulate a recommendation to either close the press or continue its operations. Our first task was to assess the organization's commitment to and the viability of the enterprise: did it make sense—economically and consistent with their overall mission—for them to even be in book publishing? Working with the board of directors and the executive director we found that book publishing fit the mission of The Colorado Mountain Club, and that it was potentially profitable, as well. |
